The Cardinals played their first game in 17 days Saturday at the G-Spot, but you wouldn’t know it after the first inning of play. The dirty birds from St. Louis put up four runs on Lucas Giolito, and rode that to a 5-1 win in the first of two seven-inning games Saturday.
Danny Mendick. Really the only Sox player that did much of anything good. He had two of the Sox three hits, and scored the lone run.
Pretty much everyone else. They made a team that was off for two and a half weeks look like they hadn’t missed any time at all. Giolito had a bad first inning and that set a bad tone for the Sox. The offense looked lethargic and uninspired.
The injured list. Utility man Leury Garcia got put on the 45-day injured list, effectively ending his season. Given how badly the injury bug has bitten the Sox this year, losing someone as versatile as him really hurts. It’ll mean we’ll see a lot more of Danny Mendick going forward, and it’ll likely send Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn scrambling to find another Garcia to add to the roster, since those two seem to feel it necessary to have at least one Garcia on the roster at any time. For now, no mas Garcias.
Game two gamer coming soon. In the meantime, I’d have a beer. In fact, I’m surprised I’m not having a beer right now.
