After Tuesday evening’s first-televised intrasquad game at Wrigley Field, featuring a pitching matchup of Kyle Hendricks and Yu Darvish, there was a Wednesday afternoon tilt featuring the back of toe rotation, Tyler Chatwood and Alec Mills. It’s a good thing they didn’t sell tickets to this one, boy…you’d pay for the whole seat, but only need the edge!!!
All kidding aside, one wrinkle in this one was that six of the Cubs’ summer camp guys didn’t get the results of their COVID-19 tests back, so some Taxi Squad guys got a taste of playing in the ol’ ballpark.
Let’s get to this…
Seeing some prospects play. Christopher Morel hit a double, Brennan Davis looked solid in center, and Miguel Amaya damn near Charlie Browned Chatwood.
No word of a lie, now I kind of want to see Brailyn Marquez show up and air it out for an inning.
Josh Phegley. He hit a dong, and has solidified his spot not only on the 30 man roster to start the season, but also as the “26th man” for the second half of the season. David Ross will have a lot more flexibility with his catching corps having three capable big league catchers this season, as Amaya won’t force the issue until the beginning of next season at the earliest.
Willson Contreras. Another dong for him. He might make the squad.
Ian Happ also homered, and if Ross wants to have the flexibility of switch hitters in the lineup, having him and Victor Caratini will allow him that.
What’s going to happen after next Friday if players don’t have their test results before game time? What happens if there’s a positive in there? Stay tuned.
I can’t even call this “Ugly”, I just wasn’t sure where else to put it. It was an intrasquad game without enough guys, so clubhouse guy Danny Mueller played an inning in left, and Minor League Coordinator Jonathan Mota played second base in the same inning.
