LET ME SHOW YOU THE ERROR OF YOUR WAYS — White Sox 4, Angels 7

The story of the first three games of this season-opening series has been the White Sox defense allowing unearned runs, and allowing two winnable games to get away from them, and turn into losses. And the one they did win, got too close for comfort too. But on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, the script was flipped, as it was the Angels wonky defense allowing the Sox to score four unearned runs, as they only had five singles through 9 innings.

THE GOOD:

Well, they didn’t give up any unearned runs, in an errorless defensive effort, their first of the year. They’ll still need to improve that aspect of their team game to win games, because a couple more losses like they’ve had this series could cost them a playoff spot.

The bullpen was also better, keeping the Angels at 4 and allowing the Sox to tie it, with a little help from some wayward throws by the Angels defenders. Aaron Bummer threw a perfect inning, Jose Ruiz only allowed one hit, and Matt Foster, with the winning run on base in the bottom of the 9th, blew away Mike Trout with a fastball. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got.

THE BAD:

The Sox were 0-for-17 with any runners on base in the game. All of their hits were singles, and 3 of their 4 runs scored were unearned. This supposed potent offense was anything but on Sunday night.

And the late-inning bullpen woes continued when Matt Foster served up a game-winning 3-run home run that sent the Sox to a 1-3 start on the year.

Tim Anderson also left the game due to injury, and his status going forward isn’t immediately known as the team heads to Seattle for a three-game set with the Mariners, starting Monday.

Carlos Rodon will make his first start of the season in Seattle Monday night, as the Sox will look for their first series win of the year in the Pacific Northwest. Hopefully they remember to play defense.
