FROM THE HOME OFFICE — Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

Thursday night was supposed to be the ‘MLB at Field of Dreams’ game in Dyersville, Iowa, between the White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. It promised beautiful visuals of baseball players (wearing, presumably, throwback uniforms circa 1919) walking through the corn fields just like in the movie, and it would allow MLB to shine a very bright spotlight on this young, talented Sox team.

MLB has announced that the Field of Dreams Classic will be played at some point in 2021.

Alas, because we cannot have nice things in this, the year of some people’s Lord, 2020, the Cardinals couldn’t play by the rules, and a good chunk of the team tested positive for COVID-19, which caused the postponement of the Field of Dreams game, as well as Friday’s series opener in Chicago between the Sox and Cardinals.

For all the talk of “The Cardinal Way”, you’d think they could do the right thing off the field as much as they preach about doing the right thing on the field. But here we are, staring down the gauntlet of another series postponed for the Cardinals, this one against the White Sox, all because a couple players on the Cardinals had to hit up the casino on an early season road trip.

There will be bellyaching among Cardinals fans about how the Cardinals will have to play something like 55 games in 44 days, but I’d like to remind the self-described “best fans in baseball” that the players on their favorite team made this bed, and now they’re gonna have to sleep in it. And if that ends up being the reason they miss the playoffs, well, too bad. I won’t beat a dead horse bird anymore about the myth of the “Cardinal Way”, as Fork pretty much took a sledgehammer to it here.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

For now, the stadium MLB built in Iowa will sit and wait for the White Sox for another year, as MLB has said that the Field of Dreams Classic will be scheduled for sometime in August of 2021.

Looking forward, a quick perusal of the 2021 White Sox schedule currently shows the Yankees coming to Chicago for a three game series starting on Friday, August 13, 2021, with the previous Thursday a scheduled off day. The Yankees also, as of now, have that Thursday off, and their previous series has them in Kansas City before heading to Chicago, while the Sox head home following a Wednesday game in Minnesota. It wouldn’t surprise me if MLB announced the Field of Dreams match-up as Yankees @ White Sox on August 12, 2021 in Iowa. The logistics are all set up for it to happen.

It’s a shame we will have to wait another year for this showcase, but hopefully the White Sox will make the wait worth it. Meanwhile, the Cardinals can only blame themselves for not being able to participate in this marquee event.

  1. Nothing brings a city together like a shared hatred for the Cardinals.
